ALONISSOS > OVERVIEW

Alonissos is the second largest and the easternmost island of the Sporades. It is a picturesque island that combines the aquamarine of the sea with the rich vegetation and the traditional architecture of the island.

The old capital was Alonissos or Hora, built on the top of a hill during the Dark Ages according to the architecture of that time. Today, the capital as well as the island's harbour is located at Patitiri which is considered a modern centre with apartments and taverns serving lots of sea food.

The emblem of the island is the Monachus Monachus Mediterranean seal a protected species that was the reason for the first National Marine Park of Greece to be founded there. The Marine Park is a unique biotope that not only deals with the protection of the seals, but also with the research, the rescue and care of Mediterranean seals and other mammals.

In the natural environment of Alonissos visitors can enjoy themselves all year round as there are alternative activities for them like walking, fishing, sailing or visiting the islands of the Marine Park.
