Spetses Greek Islands Saronic Greece

Spetses is the south western most part of the Saronic Gulf islands, 53 nautical miles from Piraeus and is located at the entrance of the Argolida Gulf. The island has about 4,100 residents who live mainly in the town.

In antiquity the island was named Pytiousa meaning 'pine covered'. The current name of the island comes from the Venetians who called it Isola di Spezzia, meaning 'fragrant island', because of its aromatic plants.

The harbour and capital of the island is a conservation area. Old mansions with red tiled roofs, scenic cobbled lanes and courtyards full of colourful flowers compose a picturesque setting. The home of Bouboulinas and the house of Hatzigianni-Mexi, the first sovereign of island, with exhibits of the revolution are some of the sights to be visited.

The enchanting and picturesque island of Spetses is ideal for short breaks for the Athenians, but equally a good choice for summer vacations. Cars are prohibited on the island; the only means of transport are traditional horse-drawn carriages and motor cycles.
