ZAKYNTHOS (ZANTE) > OVERVIEW

Zakynthos, was called Levante's Fiore by the Venetians. It is the southernmost island and the third biggest island of the Ionian. It is located in the south of Kefalonia and west of Peloponnesus with a population of about 35.000 residents.

Zakynthos is an island of contrasts with a large proportion of it being mountainous, with low pine forests and fertile plains. There are beaches on the north, east and southern coastlines, whilst to the west are imposing rocky coasts with many marine caves as the Galazia (light blue) Cave in the North West part of the island.

The island is one of the last shelters of the Caretta-Caretta marine turtle and the Monachus Monachus Seal. In Lagana Gulf the National Marine Park was founded for their protection.

The island's capital is Zakynthos or Hora as the locals call it. The town is built amphitheatrically throughout the verdant eastern slopes of Bohalis hill. It is a well organised tourist town with many hotels and rooms to satisfy every visitor's requirements.
