Travel Guide Naxos Island Cyclades Greece
The Church of Agios Mamas is famous for its fine cross, sculptures and murals and is dedicated to Agios Mamas, patron saint of the shepherds.
Because it is so old, it is believed that this church once housed the Orthodox cathedral before the Venetian occupation (1207).
The Orthodox Cathedral is located on the north side of the capital and was built around 1787 in dedication to Zoodochos Pigi. In the interior of the church, fine wall-paintings can be admired, which richly decorate the church.
This beautiful church stands close to the little village of Moni and is an Early Christian church, one of the oldest churches on Naxos Island, dating back to the 6th- 7th century with round, smooth shapes and a dome, its interior is decorated with beautiful and very valuable wall-paintings.
It is located in Apeirathos and in the interior of the temple one can see various old pictures and an elaborate marble chancel screen.
This Temple was built in 1718 and is located in Filoti. If you visit it you will have the opportunity to see the belfry which dates back to 1801 but also the marble chancel screen in the interior of the temple.
It is a church which dates back to the middle of the 9th century and while in the old days it had the shape of a basilica, today it is in shape of a cross with a dome. The church functions as an orthodox Christian temple to the present day.
