HERAKLION > OVERVIEW

The Prefecture of Heraklion is the largest and is centrally located bordered to the west by Rethymnon and to the east by Lassithi. Heraklion is the capital of the prefecture and is the largest city on Crete; it is also the 5th largest city in Greece. Heraklion is also the administrative capital of the island having succeeded to the position from Chania in 1971.

The central area of the prefecture is mountainous, to the north are lowlands with many beach resorts and to the south are large agricultural plains with coastal resorts overlooking the Libyan Sea.
