Travel Guide Rhodes Island Dodecanese Greece

Rhodes is the largest island of the Dodecanese with a population of 130,000 residents. Its geographical position contributed to the cultural and economic growth of the island in each historical period. Various cultures claimed sovereignty leaving their mark on the island.
The city of Rhodes is the capital of the island and of the Prefecture of the Dodecanese located at its northern tip. Its medieval city has been built semi-circularly round the city of Rhodes. Walls, castles, galleries, fortresses and palaces reflect its history. The Medieval City is a World Heritage monument and is the largest and best-maintained fortified city in Europe, with many Hellenic, Byzantine, medieval and Ottoman monuments. Beyond the Old City, are the Kallitheas Loutra, the valley of the butterflies, Prophet Elia, Lindo with its castle and Rodini Park.
Rhodes has a wide choice of beaches from the cosmopolitan to the more isolated: Vlyha, Lindos, Faliraki, Ladiko, Kolymbia, Stegna, Kalathos, Tsambika, Agathoi, Pefki, Prasonisi, Kamiros are busiest. For those who prefer pebble beaches: Afantou, Haraki, Kallithea, Spilies, Gennadi, Tholos and the Fourni of Monolithou.
Rhodes has a well-developed tourist infrastructure with conference centres, hotels, apartments, rooms for rent that can satisfy the needs of the most demanding visitor and it is also famed for its lively night-life.
