Kos, the island of Hippocrates, the father of medicine, is the third largest of the Dodecanese island group and second in population with 30,100 residents. It is located north west of Rhodes.
The main characteristic of the island is its rich vegetation. The mountain tops with verdant slopes scattered with traditional settlements of white painted houses surrounded by flowers.
In the north east is Kos, the capital town and its harbour. Interesting sights here include the ruins of the ancient city with Hellenic and Roman buildings near in the harbour, the Archaeological Museum in Plateia Eleftherias, the Knights Castle in the harbour, the platano of Hippocrates and the Asklipeio that is 4 km from the town.
Kos' beaches are large and sandy. Kardamaina with its beautiful landscape and aquamarine waters, Tigkaki, Marmari, Kefalos and Paradise are just a few of the many beaches on the island.
The island has well-developed tourist structure including a major conference centre, hotels, rooms of all categories and a lively nightly life.
