KALYMNOS > OVERVIEW

Kalymnos Greek Islands Dodecanese Greece

Kalymnos is the fourth largest island of the Dodecanese. It is located in the south eastern Aegean between Leros and Kos. It is known as 'the island of the sponge divers' because it was the main occupation of Kalymnos for many centuries and to which it owes a large part of its economic prosperity and fame.

Kalymnos with her unique geophysical landscape is a popular destination for visitors seeking something different. In recent years it has acquired fame as a climbing centre and has over 850 organised climbing routes. Another focus of attraction is its sponge diving tradition and a magical undersea wealth. There is the Government owned Faculty of Professional Divers, unique in Greece, as well as other privately owned Diving Centres for lovers of the sport.

The island beaches have crystal clear waters and most offer the possibility of marine sports. Some of these are: Panormos, Platis Gialos, Kantouni, Emborio, Gefira and Akti.
