SYROS > OVERVIEW

Syros is the capital of the Cyclades group of islands. It had been an urban centre since the 19th century, with strong naval connections, flourishing economy and a strong cultural identity, with significant historical people such as Markos Vamvakaris, Theofilos Kairis, Georgios Souris etc. Its many elegant neoclassical mansions are well maintained and have led to the island being categorised as the 'Sovereign of the Aegean'. In Ermoupoli one will find the impressive Town Hall, the Apollo Theatre that is the 'Scala of Milan' in miniature, the Custom House at the end of the harbour, the Ladopoulou Palace, the social club 'Greece' and many other imposing mansions that today accommodate museums, public services, hotels and various enterprises.

There are few beaches, but they are all beautiful, while the settlements have managed to maintain their nobility and traditional character. Syros offers a well-developed tourism infrastructure with elegant, luxurious hotels, tavernas and restaurants of high quality, rooms and villas for rent and a casino.
