SANTORINI > OVERVIEW
Santorini belongs to the Cyclades group of islands in the Aegean Sea. In fact, Santorini is an island group consisting of Fyra or Thira, Thirassia, Aspronissi, Old and New Kameni. It is distinguished by the volcano in the centre of the cluster. Fyra, perched on the edge of the caldera, is the capital of the island. Oia, to the north of Fyra, is renowned for its spectacular sunsets. The town and villages are characterised by their traditional Cycladic architecture making it a popular, romantic destination.
The Santorini cluster was originally one island known as Strongili, but the violent eruption of the volcano in about 1600 BC caused it to collapse into itself leaving only its outline. This eruption is attributed to the destruction of the Minoan civilisation on Crete.
The island today presents an awesome landscape and an archaeological heritage dating from prehistoric times. The archaeological wealth can be seen at Akrotiri and Mesa Bouno.
