Travel Guide Kea (Tzia) Island Cyclades Greece
Kea is the most westerly of the Cyclades and one of the least populated. Its old name was Ydroysa and it was renamed Tzia during the Ottoman occupation. Its current name of Kea comes from the hero Keo who was the leader of the Lokron from Nafpactos who occupied the island in ancient times.
The largest settlement is Ioulida and has about 600 residents. Korissa, the harbour of the island, has about 350 residents. In the gulf of Agios Nikolaos is the oldest settlement of Agia Irini, close to Vourkari.
From prehistoric Ioulida comes the famed Stone Lion that dates back to 600 BC, while the ruins of the temple of Apollo and Athina in ancient Karthea are impressive.
There are hotels and rooms that provide for the comfort and needs of all visitors to the island.
