Travel Guide Amorgos Island Cyclades Greece
The island of Amorgos is located on the south-east end of the Cyclades and its population is about 1850. The island is known for its rich history and tradition, as well as its traditional Cycladic architecture and art. The Ruins and artifacts found throughout the island are evidence that Amorgos has been inhabited since the Prehistoric Age. The islands bloomed during the Cycladic Period when commerce, shipping, art and literature developed in the area.
The most famous religious icon of Amorgos is that in the monastery of Panagia Hozoviotissa, which hangs on an impressive wall that stretches up to a height of 300m. The steep rocks that cover the entire East coast rise from the depths of the sea creating the mesmerizing landscape that inspired the film director Luc Besson to shoot the amazing Le Grand Bleu (The Big Blue). The rocky walls smooth out towards the west, where you find beautiful sandy beaches and the island's two ports, Katapola and Aegiali. The picturesque capital known as Chora is built on a hill in the centre of the island and is decorated with windmills, white houses, and many old churches overlooked by the imposing castle.
