RETHYMNO > OVERVIEW

The Rethymnon Prefecture is centrally located on the island of Crete with the Prefectures of Chania to the west and Heraklion to the east. A large portion of the Prefecture is covered with the Psiloriti mountain range with sheep herding in the main while in the lowlands there are orange and olive groves.

The capital of the Prefecture is Rethymnon on the north coast with a Venetian 'Fortetsa' Fortress and a harbour with regular ferries to Piraeus. The old town area bears witness to its colourful history through the ages.

There are important sites such as the Monasteries of Arkadi and Preveli and the Zonianon Cave as well as the traditional villages of Anogia and Axos.

The beaches on the north and south coasts of the Prefecture offer crystal clear waters with all types of sea activities amid contrasting scenery of long sandy beaches and intimate coves.
