KYTHIRA > OVERVIEW

Kythira Island Greece

The island of Kythira was also known by its Venetian name of Cerigo, the island of Aphrodite the goddess of love. It is located between Crete and the Peloponnese where the Aegean, Ionian and Cretan Seas meet. Although the island is administrated by Attica historically and geographically it belongs to the Eptanisa (seven islands) of the Ionian Sea.

An island which has been influenced by many cultures that have passed its shores: Minoan, Mycenaean, Byzantium and Venetian. The absence of Ottoman oppression, its association with Eptanisa and the significant period of English domination compose the cultural character where the effects of the west and east are apparent in the architecture, in the language and its delivery. The northern area draws origin and influence from the Peloponnese while the south draws mainly from Crete and the Eptanisa.

Magical landscapes, generous hospitable people, a calm and relaxed atmosphere that fascinates visitors with beautiful beaches, crystal clear waters, waterfalls and caverns inviting exploration.
